Once nicknamed “the Bloody Angle,” Doyers Street in Chinatown is notorious for its gruesome history of deadly gang fights during the first decades of the 1900s. Today, tucked into the mysterious, bending street, is something much more pleasant: a lounge called Apotheke.
Apotheke is a welcoming sanctuary in a murky area of lower Manhattan. Behind the bar, seasoned mixologists dressed as pharmacists in white overcoats shake, stir, and “prescribe” liquid concoctions to help you achieve good health and have a great time. From stress relievers and pain killers to therapeutic treatments and even aphrodisiacs, these drinks – some made with special Chinese herbs – are each intoxicating in their uniqueness. The cozy, dimly lit setting lends a perfect space for a relaxing, after-dinner sojourn, or a first date.
