Fair isle sweaters are the kind of wintry, country club staple that will never go out of style. This timeless trend that originated in Scotland in the early 1900s has been immortalized over the years by fashion figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Twiggy, and Paul McCartney. Today, fair isle knits hold court beside tweed blazers and rubber wellies in the closets of outdoorsy prepsters everywhere. But while more traditional brands such as Ralph Lauren and L.L. Bean have perfected the classic, leisure time look, newer fashion houses have refreshed the preppy-chic basic. Proenza Schouler breathed life into the intarsia knit with neon colors and contrasting graphic designs (worn by Keri Russell, below), while Moncler gave a flirty edge to the otherwise demure style by creating an open backed version with rear grosgrain ribbon fastening.
