Shoe of the Summer: Gladiator Sandals

Gladiator Sandals- Then and Now

Before Valentino featured gladiator sandals on his Spring/Summer 2015 catwalk, they were a favorite of Carly Simon–in the 1960s. That’s my favorite thing about old trends, they never really leave us. Even when they spiral out of fashion, they are destined to make a comeback.

In the late 60s and early 70s, gladiator sandals were the perfect match for mod girls and hippies alike. They disappeared in the 80s and 90s, and made a brief comeback in the late 2000s before vanishing in the wake of Birkenstock-inspired sandals. Featured in Spring/Summer 2015 collections of Valentino and Chloe, among others, the strappy style is now flying off shelves at Barneys and Bergdorf, poised to take the throne as the shoe of the summer.

Look of the Week: Valentino’s Rockstud Handbag

Valentino Bag

Aussie blogger Nicole Warne, of garypeppergirl.com fame, was an obvious choice for my favorite look of this week. On Wednesday night she rocked a ladylike Valentino ensemble at the designer’s Sala Bianca Haute Couture show in New York. Warne looked sweet and sunny in her simple yellow dress, tutti frutti handbag, and studded heels. Her look exuded the fresh, effortless tone of life down under, and added a blast of energy to the fashion show, which Valentino dedicated entirely to the color white.

Valentino’s studded handbags come in various shapes, sizes, and hues. A few of my favorite are:

  1. Rockstud Mini Tote in pink, available here.
  2. Rockstud Va Va Voom Chain Shoulder Bag in azure, available here.
  3. Rockstud Flap Chain Shoulder Bag in orange, available here.
