Shoe of the Summer: Gladiator Sandals

Gladiator Sandals- Then and Now

Before Valentino featured gladiator sandals on his Spring/Summer 2015 catwalk, they were a favorite of Carly Simon–in the 1960s. That’s my favorite thing about old trends, they never really leave us. Even when they spiral out of fashion, they are destined to make a comeback.

In the late 60s and early 70s, gladiator sandals were the perfect match for mod girls and hippies alike. They disappeared in the 80s and 90s, and made a brief comeback in the late 2000s before vanishing in the wake of Birkenstock-inspired sandals. Featured in Spring/Summer 2015 collections of Valentino and Chloe, among others, the strappy style is now flying off shelves at Barneys and Bergdorf, poised to take the throne as the shoe of the summer.

Splurge or Save, the Golden Globes Edition: Translating an Evening Trend into a Daytime Staple

One of my favorite trends at the Golden Globes last weekend was the color red, worn by some veteran, big and small screen fashionistas, and also a few newer ones. Seeing Lupita Nyong’o float across the red carpet in a cherry Ralph Lauren off-the-shoulder cape dress made my heart flutter, and Emma Watson’s backless dress-and-pants combo by Dior was unbearably chic and effortless looking. While Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen often flies under the best-dressed radar, her two-toned Carolina Herrera gown with uber-luxe velvet belt was the epitome of elegance and made me just as excited as it did when I saw it on the runway last year.

If seeing all those crimson dresses at the Golden Globes made you want to paint the town red too, I’ve got you covered. Below are two, nearly identical dresses that will help you translate the stars’ spicy evening look into a daytime staple.

Will you splurge, or will you save?
